Today, we get to know Tamara - a San Diego native and owner of Shout & About in Echo Park, Los Angeles.
Tell us a little about yourself: Who are you & where are you from?
Hello! My name is Tamara and I am from San Diego, CA. I’ve been living in LA for 5 years now and I love it!
What are your hobbies & how do they relate to your shop?
I’m pretty much obsessed with dogs, and spend a lot of time out walking my two pups, Ruby and Louie. I also work with a local rescue, A Purposeful Rescue, to foster dogs so we always have a third foster pup around as well. Through Shout & About I was able to host an event where a percentage of proceeds benefitted the rescue, which is something I hope to do again. I love design and spending my free time soaking up as much inspiration as possible- which I utilize at the shop every day! Traveling is another huge passion of mine, so I love finding new ways to bring a touch of my travels home as inspiration for the shop.
What inspired the opening of Shout & About?
One of my primary inspirations since opening the shop in June 2015 was to create a place where someone could find a gift at an affordable price point. There are so many stores in LA that I absolutely love, but on the East side I found it hard to find places to pick up thoughtful, quality gifts that wouldn’t break the bank.
What goes into the process of curating the shop?
Curating product is one of the most fun but challenging parts of running the shop. I am continuously on the hunt for products that are exciting and new, fit within our aesthetic, and are within a reasonable price point. Social media has been a wonderful resource for discovering new designers and brands, as well as spending a great deal of time visiting tradeshows, blogs and Pinterest!
What’s the most rewarding part about being a retail owner?
I would say that the most rewarding thing about being a retail store owner is having a space that you are proud of and excited to share with customers. Merchandising product that you’ve carefully curated in fun, new ways allows the shop to come alive! After we’ve spent time rearranging a new display, I’m always so excited to see how our customers respond and what they gravitate towards!
There are some really awesome themes displayed in the shop- we especially love the zodiac area! How do you choose those themes?
Themes within the shop usually come about after I’ve found myself ordering products that have a common thread. These primarily stem from current trends that are prevalent in the design world, but haven’t hit the retail market just yet. This is why spending time on blogs, social media and visiting tradeshows is such a fundamental part of being a retail buyer! It allows you to stay current and maybe even a little bit ahead of the game.
How did you find out about P.F.?
I discovered P.F. Candle Co. the way I do SO many of the brands we carry: through social media! I had seen so many of my favorite people raving about the scents. Once I had the opportunity to smell them in person, I was totally sold.
What made you decide to make us a part of your shop?
Finding candles that can fill a room but aren’t overpowering or artificial-smelling can actually be quite difficult! I loved that the smell of an unlit P.F. candle rings completely true to the way it smells when lit. The scents are natural and fresh, and I love the classic gender-neutral packaging! I love having something in the shop that can be equally appreciated by men and women, and can fit into a variety of different household décor.
Do you have a favorite P.F. scent?
I’m a huge sucker for a seasonal scent to get me feeling festive, which has me currently loving Orange Cardamom! I truly do love all the scents from P.F. and keep a diverse selection at home so I choose one depending on my mood. Amber & Moss is always my go-to before having guests over.

Lastly, do you have any advice to those dreaming of one day opening their own shop?
Opening a shop is a truly worthwhile experience and one that I highly recommend to anyone who dreams of doing so. That being said, I think it’s important to recognize the long hours, hard work and financial commitment it involves. Being your own boss is a wonderful thing but at the end of the day, if there is work to be done – from fun tasks such as merchandising to mundane ones like bookkeeping – that all falls on your shoulders. Learning to prioritize tasks, schedule your time effectively and set realistic financial expectations are all things you can master with time, but owning a shop is an ongoing effort.
